This week in our classrooms we continued to
learn about Rosh Hashanah, learning all about honey and bumblebees! We had a
very busy week with a visit from Ariella’s Bubby, a real bee keeper who came in
and taught us all about how the bees make the honey! Experiential learning is more than just seeing
a "real world" example of what the students have been learning in
class, it is structuring the lessons so the students can do the work for
themselves and have meaningful engagement. The child does not passively receive
information from a teacher, but actively participates in the learning. Getting to see how bees live and make honey really brought to life everything we are learning about and the class loved it!
Having fun with our
senses we took time to feel, smell, and taste honey this week. Having sensory
recognition is an effective and fun way to learn for this age group.
In art we did some activates
that incorporated math by counting and
colouring the stripes on the bumblebee, and fine motor skills by gluing brown tissue
paper onto out shofars.
Circle time is a great
way for preschoolers to get a sense of community with other kids their age and
enhance their social skills as well as improve their attention span! This week we
practiced our Rosh Hashanah song and dance and dressed up like bees getting
honey from the “flowers” outside.
Cooking can help young
kids learn and practice some basic math concepts and build language skills.
Making Honey Play-dough was such a highlight this week for the class. We all
took turns pouring and mixing and then everyone got to smell and play!
With another wonderful
week concluded, myself and Hadar want to wish all the families in our classroom
a wonderful, happy and healthy new-year.
