This unit is all about our favorite books and the authors who created them! The books that we decided to focus on were Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by: Bill Martin, Jr. And John Archambault, The very hungry caterpillar by: Eric Carle, and Oh, The places you'll go! By: Dr. Suses. Each book is unique and has multiple lovely messages. So many teachable moments were presented as we went through this unit. Most importantly the children were given the opportunity to really exercise and enhance their imagination skills, counting skills, literacy skills and so much more.
Having Parents a part of each unit always adds a special touch to each experience and allows for the children to be really involved and invested in their learning. So a special Thank you to Andrea and our other volunteers who came out to read some of our favorite stories to our friends. Since this unit, the children are more aware of how to handle books, they take their time turning the pages, and are always on look out for a book that may be in harms way. We are the books protectors and they need people like us to always make sure that they are well taken care of, please continue the topic at home and encourage your children to be gentle with their books. Each book holds a great story waiting to be told., please protect the stories so everyone can enjoy.
Here are some highlights:
The very hungry Caterpillar,
Chicka chicka, boom boom,
Counting the number of letters we have in our chick chick boom boom name.
Exploring a coconut
Oh, The places you'll go,
We made Hot air balloons, world maps, and reflected on all the places we had been, and places we would like to be.
OH, The Places You'll Go!,
We created our own world maps
During this unit, the children had the opportunity to become authors themselves. We read an Oliver Jeffers story which sparked an interest for the children that kids can be authors too, so we collaborated on a class story book. Please enjoy a rough copy of the final story below:
One really cold winter morning a group of children took a class trip to imagination land. The children quickly discovered the colourful word of their imagination, things were alot brighter, and extraordinary.
Morh Galit quickly gathered the children and said "Okay friends we are going to make a straight line against the wall." Look, I did" said Jamie. "That's great Jamie" Morah Galit called.
"Let's close our eyes for a short while and let's thing of our happy places" announced Morah Lauren. "I GO SWIMMING AT THE BEACH" yelled Yakira, "Okay friends, we are at the beach and look up there, I see the very tall coconut tree!" Morah Lauren exclaimed. Daniel and Julian began to stare into the sky in disbelieve... "Ooooh no" says Talia "There is something in that tree!" Yelled Adina. Morah Lauren and Morah Galit gathers the group into a circle as they brain storm for an idea to see what is in the tree. Morah Lauren asks "did anyone notice any details of the mystery object moving in the very tall coconut tree?"
Atara says "it has a fluffy tail" Yisrael Mier shouts "and 2 big eyes" Hailey says "Its stuck" Julian "I see dark fur, and he is too high up" Mackayla "It's a Squirrel!" Guys, I think you might just be right, your describing a squirrel, we have been noticing alot of those back at school in our trees, how can we help Mr. Squirrel down? Daniel "We need to call the Paw Patrol!" Both morahs smiled and said "What a great idea, luckily, we've got the paw patrol on speed dial, their on their way." Look over there" pointed Ofra. The paw patrol pumps came floating down in a hot air balloon and scooped the squirrel down. "No job's too big, no pup's too small" cheered all the children. Thanks to this great group of children we were able to save the squirrel who was stuck in very tall coconut tree. We need more children like you who care about animals to help us save the day!
The end.
