Fall is in the Air

Fall:

Dear parents,

We have been surrounded by the sights, smells and textures of fall in the Nursery Jk class!

We explored different fall harvest vegetables. We used tweezers to remove the kernels from the Indian corn strengthening our pincer grasps.

We then counted the kernels and glued them next to the corresponding numbers. We also used leaves and flower bulbs to strengthen our number recognition and 1 to 1 correspondence.

The children have been collecting twigs during outdoor time for the pat few weeks. We decided bring clay into the classroom and to use the twigs to create a tree sculpture.

Then we painted our tree sculptures and we will be adding beads to them next week!

We learned all about leaves and the changes that we see in the fall. We read many books about the leaves and saw pictures of different types of leaves. We learned that leaves have veins just like people. We looked at the veins on our hands and then we looked at the veins on the leaves. We also learned the names of the differnt parts of a tree: roots, trunk, branches and leaves. We each had a chance to do leaf rubbings to see the veins and shape of the leaves.

We experimented with shaving cream, glue and food colouring, mixing them together and spreading the colourful mixture on our leaves. This was a great science experiment and sensory experience!

We got to use needles and string to sew leaf garlands. This was a great fine motor activity and we felt so grown up! The children especially love to be given the independence and trust to do grown up activities!

"The environment is the third teacher"
Thank you to Ellen, Karen and Lisa for coming to plant narcissus bulbs with us! Thank you Karen for picking up such a beautiful selection for us!

Literacy: We got to find the letters of our names in the Alphabet soup. We love all sensory activities and our favourite part is cleaning up with our mini brooms and shovels (yes, you heard right!!)

We found the letters of our names using Alphabet bean bags, we plays find your name and many other name games this week.

We made name explosions using glue, baking soda and vinegar!. This activity combined science, literacy and fine motor skills all in one!

We finished of our week with an amazing sports class with coach Zev and a Shabbat Party!

Shabbat Shalom!
Morah Chayala and Morah Chaya

Overheard in Nursery JK:
"Morah how could a tree have a trunk if it doesn't look like an elephant?!"
