Pre-Nursery 1 - Fall Unit

Fall Unit

Shalom Families!

Our Fall unit has been so much fun as we enjoy observing the changes in our environment right before our eyes. The children were very excited daily to learn something new or to observe a new change in their surroundings.

Autumn is not only a wonderful time of year with crunchy, colourful leaves and cooler weather, but it is also a great time to learn some new autumn facts. Together we discussed some exciting things about the fall season and went on exciting quests to learn more!

We already knew, that some changes we could expect were leaves changing colours and falling from the trees.. But what does a toddler know about the leaf itself? we used this as an observation question to stir us in the right directions to see how much our friends knew.  Together we gathered that leaves require sunlight, need water and grow on a tree. We did our own research and learned that they also need  chlorophyll and carbon dioxide to make food for themselves which keeps them alive! We learned that Chlorophyll is what makes the leaves green; Look at us being little scientists!

When winter approaches, leaves make a coating for themselves which blocks their water source; in the absence of water, the leaves no longer produce chlorophyll
When the leaves turn colours in the fall, they actually are returning to their normal colours. During the summer months, the chlorophyll present in the leaves causes the leaves to turn green, blocking the leaves' actual colours!
Red and purple leaves are actually caused by the presence of sugars from sap that is trapped inside of the leaves, once the leaves have turned brown, they no longer receive any nutrients. Such an exciting unit so far!

Here we decorated our pet rocks using fall colours that we could see on our playground. We add different sized googly eyes to the rocks. We enjoyed using the rocks through story telling as puppets.

We painted with fall colours on mac tac paper with drawn on fall leaves, we also used plain white paper with q-tips during art.

We created fall trees using our whole arm, finger tips and paint.

We conducted a leaf graph to understand how many children like the same types of leaves.

Here are a list of songs we sang throughout the day:

1. Fall Leaf
2. Where is Thumbkin?
3. Happy and you know it (class favorite)
4. How are you feeling today?
5. There's a Dinosaur, knocking at my door!
7. Old McDonald
8. Wheels on the bus (Class Favorite)
9. Baby Shark (Class favorite)
10. Bringing home my baby bumblebee
