Our space unit was out of this world! This unit was filled with such rich learning. We had so much fun incorporating space into our math, literacy, sensory, art, fine motor and everything to the moon and back!
Adding sensory components to our shape tracing adds more dimensions to our geometry development!
Painting planets with moon rocks we made in class!
Tracing rocket ship shapes! we focused a lot in this unit on shape recognition. kids notice different shapes even if they don’t yet know that the shapes have names. It takes longer for young children to learn the specific properties of each shape, such as the number of sides or how the shape looks. Giving preschoolers lots of practice with shapes helps them solidify their understanding of the two-dimensional structures. That knowledge of shapes gives the young children an advantage in many areas of learning.
Circle time for this unit introduced our new movement song Zoom, Zoom Zoom:
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
If you want to take a trip,
Climb aboard my rocket ship.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
(hold 5 fingers up and count down)
Blast off!
Colour sorting!
Matching shapes to their proper home!
Measuring stars!
Sports fun!
The light table transformed into the night sky with wonderful colours!
Counting stars!
Outer space SLIME!
Galaxy Bottles!
Science experiments are an awesome introduction to higher learning concepts. They spark curiosity, They help develop questions, problem solving, and finding answers. Science experiments introduce a little bit of patience with quick results. Repeating these simple science experiments in different ways or with different themes is a great way to build a solid base of knowledge around the concept. Space was perfect to add a new element to some of our favourite experiments!
